Something about cultural values

Published by starlight09 at 12:10 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

I was brought up in a culture where I felt comfortable to be with people because we consider everyone as a friend in spite of age and status. We feel at ease talking to people even to strangers because they are all friendly. We even called them Aunt or Uncle even if they are not related to us by blood. This maybe the reason why we establish closeness.

Neighbors are kind mostly, if there are some who are not, just only a few of them. Most are helpful and courteous. The morning and evening greetings are heard every time we come out from our house. I can still recall these words… Hey, good morning, How are you today? what’s up? where are you going? Can you come over to our house for a jam tonight, want to go with me gathering fruits? hahaha.. and many more.

Every time you visit a friend’s house, they will never let you go unless you will eat something. It is an insult to them if you will not eat what they prepare for you. That’s neat!! And besides that, they will pack some food for you to take home to share to your kids and other family members to take part. Wonderful!!

Little kids will never called the adult people by their names. Even if they don’t know the persons, they will address them in a polite manner calling them Uncle, Auntie, Ma’am or Sir. Sons and daughters- in-law will never call their parents-in-law by their names as I often heard from people in Western countries only few call their in-laws mom and dad.

Adult children are supporting their old parents financially and morally. They even let their parents stay with them when they are too old to manage themselves alone. They will never be brought them to the nursing homes. They personally take care of their old sick relatives.

I missed these cultural values a lot now that I am far away from home. Western countries have different culture and values. It is hard to fit into it when you grow up in a different up bringing. I love the culture where I was brought up.
